The World’s First Virtual Reality HDR Pipeline

In the past decade, the industry has been working on specific procedures to capture and broadcast HDR pictures. In April 2013, the adoption of the ISO H.265 standard and the 10-bit HEVC format allowed the encoding of HDR videos at a rate which was compatible with the bandwidths in use at that time.

Intel has been playing a very active role on these issues and developed in 2016 a new processor that can decode HEVC 10 bits in real time. In order to showcase all the power of this core processor, Intel and DVgroup collaborated to create a pipeline for capturing and broadcasting 360° HDR videos.

The objective was to be able to capture and store 360° images with the highest dynamic range, and to adapt the exposure of the image in real time depending on the direction in which the user is actually watching. This technique is bringing VR and immersion to the next stage by imitating the amazing ability of the human brain to adapt vision to the lighting conditions.

The project has been presented at major tech events using the study case of the 2016 Icarus Cup (the annual festival of free flight held in Saint Hilaire, France)
